History
The Medical Instrument and Supply Set No. 5, Non-Rigid (Aid Man’s Pack) was officially accepted into the U.S inventory in 1962. By 1974, the design was made available for other NATO members to purchase or produce.
New Zealand produced a couple of different versions, maintaining the same design but utilizing different materials.
This pack was issued to medics as a field pack for holding medical supplies while operating in the field or as a standalone item for storing equipment like resuscitation kits on medical vehicles.
It was eventually replaced in the early 2000s by a purpose-built field pack specifically designed for medics.
The Pack, Medical, Olive Drab was designed to carry a substantial amount of medical equipment and could also accommodate a full Medical Instrument and Supply Set No. 3, Non-Rigid bag. Additionally, it provided space for items that the Medical Instrument and Supply Set No. 3 couldn’t hold, such as splints and IV equipment, if necessary.
Description
The Pack, Medical, Olive Drab is a large, rectangular-shaped bag. It opens at the front with a three-quarter-length zipper that runs around the outer edge. Sewn in the center of the front panel is a patch featuring a red cross on a white background.
The exterior of the pack has three patch-style pouches: one long pouch on the left side and two of the same size positioned on the top and bottom. These pouches are secured with flaps that close using metal domes.
The back of the pack is fitted with two heavy-duty, unpadded, adjustable webbing shoulder straps. Each strap ends in a heavy-duty metal spring hook that clips onto metal D-rings sewn to the base of the pack.
Inside the pack, the lid contains three large patch-style pockets. The main compartment is a spacious cavity divided into three sections. At the top, there are two square, open-top “boxes” made of cotton duck fabric, which are secured to the edge of the pack with fabric hinges and can be flattened when necessary.
The bottom of the main compartment features two cotton webbing tape ties designed to secure the Medical Instrument and Supply Set No. 3, Non-Rigid bag inside the pack. Below these ties, a rectangular webbing section includes five webbing loops and, at its base, two open-top pockets intended to hold five medicine vials.
